One thing that gets me is when the state comes in to looks around to see what is going on , they have let management know ahead of time that they are coming. so than they have time to set the paper work right and have plenty of help. Also the states should have a test for the nursing staff to see if they are able to deal with the elderly. So many things are wrong with nursing homes. Trust me i work in one
I don’t know what state this person works
in. But I know In S.C. Nobody knows
went the state is coming in and
I have worked in a nursing home for
over twentyone years as a nurse.

I work in Michigan and the state does notify the Nursing Homes and hospitals that they are going to come in. i have worked in a nursing home for 30 yrs and iam so upset with the things i see. And the State does very little to help. Like i was told at one time if they looked at everthing there would be no place to put the residents. they would have to close them all.
I have been an advocate for the elderly for over 12 years. I am continually shocked at the lack of knowledge and concern our legislators & public have about the care elderly receive in nursing homes & in independant living homes.
I congratulate State Rep Denney! I would like to know if his bill passed & is made into law!
Donna is exactly right about Nursing Homes getting previous notice about complaints, etc. My aunt was taken over by a nursing home after her son died and because of her healthy finances. Tens of thousands of dollars taken with nothing to do with her nursing home costs. We have checks, depositions from the administrator, doctor, etc., and not one state agency will do anything. The attorney generals office stated that they don’t like to go into small towns and upset people so they don’t. DHS cleared this situation without EVER interviewing or talking to one family member. State Nursing Home Director advised he wasn’t interested and if he ever got “around to it”, there might be an investigation.
I applaud this paper for having the courage to speak out against this board. The Daily Oklahoman doesn’t seem to participate.
It is my understanding that the former attorney general in Oklahoma left that job and now has ownerships in nursing homes. Politics is so intertwined in our nursing home establishment here and currently, the board does have doctors, etc., sitting on it. This board needs to be comprised of people who care about the elderly, not money or politics and seeing how the governor would be the one who appoints them, that’s not going to happen.
Why are convicted sex offenders being placed in nursing homes as their means of confinement? How could our elected officials let that happen and if they didn’t know, they sure do now and why are they not doing something to stop that? The true question should be why is the public not outraged about this? There have already been several rapes in Oklahoma and think of how many are not reported coming from these facilities. The best thing happening for the elderly today is Wes Bledsoe, the advocate for the elderly, his organization is named “A Perfect Cause.” I’ve seen him on the OKC news and finally called and he is appalled and frustrated with things going on in these nursing homes. I have to agree.
House Bill 1453 could be a start in demanding “something” be done to protect our elderly. I would like to see the board be composed of individuals that have no financial gain at all. The board should consist of dedicated medical people, independant Elder Care Advocates.
In many states there appears to be a “tie” between politicians & Health Service Departments.
My parent have just been put in a nursing home in Oklahoma, they have been in one week and the home has lost their clothes, my mothers teeth and glasses. I live in California and feel like I am at the mercy of these people. I call to inquire and find they are not telling me the whole story. This is unbelievable, the homes director was very unprofessional in talking to me about the condition of my parents. I am quite upset and do not know where to turn at this point. It is very difficult when my parent moved back to Oklahoma (their birth place) to retire and now they are both ill and so far away. I can\’t even trust the home they are in to tell me the real story.
Iwould like to know who really cares about our elderly. What I have found is NO ONE. My dad is in a bad place, my step-mother has power of attorney ( which was obtained post surgery and on heavy narcotics , and also confused from being thrown in a bad place). I got APS involved hoping for help….. They don’t care either. He has no rights. It doesn’t matter what he wants or needs! He is a vey loving father and deserves better!

I also, think that this newspaper is fantastic for providing a special area in the article so people can respond!
