There are many articles out there informing the public what measures they should take to prevent becoming Identity Theft victems. Unfortunately, for the majority of folks, their information is already out there.

For a real Identity Theft Protection Product, providing assistance dealing with an Identity Theft situation, in addition to early detection, go to the following website:

Some insurance companies also offer an endorsement on your Homeowners Policy for Indentity Theft Coverage at a very reasonable cost.

First- Prepaid Legal is not a victim protection program. There are numerous nonprofit and governmental agencies that provide help for FREE including the Federal Trade Commission, the US Office of Victims of Crime and the nonprofit Identity Theft Resource Center. Consumers must be wary of profiteers that want to ask you for money on a monthly basis for a possible problem that might happen.

“Consumers must be wary of profiteers that want to ask you for money on a monthly basis for a possible problem that might happen.” That is an interesting comment.

Many people pay a monthly fee for alarm services for their homes, in case of burglary or fire. Others pay for alarm and tracking systems for their vehicles. Furthermore, having a background in IT myself, I know that responsible companies spend significant budgetary dollars on network security to protect assets from corporate espionage. While many people understand the value in spending dollars to protect physical assets, which can be easily replaced, many of those same people don’t understand the value of spending money to protect themselves, which cannot be replaced.

While there are free resources available from a variety of sources, as was stated, I recommend the consumer do his or her due diligence. Evaluate what you get with the Identity Theft Shield product, versus what is available for free. See the value for yourself.

Insurance for id theft is one thing. It can reimburse you for loss. But Prepaid Legal and plans like theirs that sell credit monitoring are not the value they claim to be. Federal law now allows every person free credit reports. By staggering those requests you can monitor your reports for free yourself. Credit monitoring also creates a false sense of security- that all their reports are being looked at (rarely) or that they can protect them. Monitoring tells you that you are a victim. Credit freezes now available in CA and TX and soon in LA and VT will be the golden tool to stop credit fraud. However, no matter how much monitoring a program does it cannot stop check fraud, criminal id theft or someone from using your information to work. Finally, before hiring an attorney (or using a prepaid retainer service) make sure that attorney has EXPERIENCE in id theft or collection action cases. Too many attorneys are using clients to learn the ropes.

I find it very interesting that Stanley DesManges, who stands to make money from id theft, is putting down the Federal Trade Commisssion and the Office of Victims of Crime. Various states also have free victim assistance and DA’s across the nation have done this for years. This isn’t an “either/or” choice but options. We know that the government peopel are well trained. ITRC people are well trained. Prepaid Legal are salespeople and nothing more.
