Regarding your comment about our president……if Obama was still president and doing and saying exactly the same things President Trump is, he would be receiving acclaim and praise. This is totally political and it’s disgusting.
But it’s not Obama. Trump is clueless. And, he is a security risk to our country as demonstrated by his behavior after his meeting with his buddy Putin.
Totally agree with Gail. I am so tired of this crisis being politicized. Pete – Have you listened to the press briefings? He has the private sector working with the government in a way we haven’t ever seen, at least not in recent memory. The Corp of Engineers are building hospital rooms in days. The World Health Organization director has praised Trump’s leadership response.
Mahalo for this. Many people in Hawaii – 5000 miles away from the continent – would love for the governor and mayors to close down the influx of visitors. It seems logical to many. So you say doing this may be held up in a court of law. Now it makes sense to me why our ‘puppet leaders’ aren’t doing it – too bad. Here comes the virus to wipe out more Hawaiians. Sadly taking the ancient wisdom in the process.
Here is the scary part of your article: “Many legal scholars would reply that it’s unconstitutional for one state to close its border with another. But in the case of declared public health emergency, would they be right?” If it’s unconstitutional, it always is. The constitution wasn’t written for just good times, it was written for all the time good & back.
It’s terrible to think about that scared people willing give up rights that they seldom get back.
It is very scary how willingly people roll over “for their protection” of course. Most shocking is 72% trust their local government to deal with the “epidemic.” If you ask these same people during normal times, it would be about 32%!
“Researchers in the U.S. found a temporary flight ban following 9/11 didn’t stop the spread of the flu, but delayed it by a couple of weeks and led to a prolonged flu season.”
“In 2009, during the outbreak of H1N1 swine flu, some countries imposed travel restrictions on flights coming from and going to Mexico. A study two years later found it “only led to an average delay in the arrival of the infection in other countries (i.e. the first imported case) of less than three days.” “No containment was achieved by such restrictions and the virus was able to reach pandemic proportions in a short time,” the authors wrote.”
Maybe you (and the author as well as the experts he cites) should look to more recent history. China imposed a total quarantine on Wuhan on January 23, and extended it to all of Hubei in following days. It worked. It kept the number of cases in a few closely connected cities under control, and prevented an explosion across China. The effect is only magnified by adjusting China’s official numbers for probable undercounts within and outside Hubei.

Not from the right. The right would be tearing him down over every single move. Trump probably most vocal via twitter

I was reading an article https://www.berliner-zeitung.de/kultur-vergnuegen/nachts-ueber-die-grenze-nach-mecklenburg-vorpommern-li.80897 about the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern having closed its borders to incoming out-of-state travelers. I thought that such a measure would not be legal in the U.S.A. Seems I was wrong.
