The entire mindset is completely off base. The end result is Vehicle traffic law that contradicts itself, when you introduce ambiguous language.The posted speed limit still applies to all lanes of travel. Exceeding said limit still violates the law on this account. I drive professionally. I remember when LEO’s set the proper standard for private citizens operating on public roads. I remember when LEO’s drove in the left lane at the posted speed limit. I remember when people had respect for the law. I remember when people feared the consequence of violating the law. Now, because LEO’s look the other way on speed limit violations greater than five mph above the posted limit, people are emboldened to further disrespect the law. It’s time to return to the common sense approach to law enforcement. It’s time to ticket tailgaters and those who exceed the posted speed limit by more than five mph.
There’s a whole lot of backwards thinking going on. The model for our laws was the Word of God. When God gave the Jew his Law, it was (without ambiguity) it was/is black and white. He said, “do this”. He said “don’t do that”. He said “if you do that, this is the consequence”. Speeding remains illegal. Failure to maintain spacing remains illegal. The new left lane only laws introduce ambiguities into vehicle traffic law. Speed limits apply equally to all lanes of travel. As amended, vehicle traffic law now contradicts itself, condoning violation of the posted speed limit. Properly interpreted, the signs saying “slower traffic keep right” means traffic willfully traveling slower than the posted speed limit, as opposed to doing so because of prohibitive conditions.
That’s the thing though, the author keeps repeating that the faster drivers “must” zig zag in traffic and “must” change lanes. Wrong. They are under no obligation to drive dangerously and put themselves and others at risk for the sake of saving a few seconds, while simultaneously breaking speed limit laws. I think it’s a travesty that laws were passed that pander to unsafe drivers while penalizing drivers who obey speed limits.
Leaving the left lane open for others to pass is common sense, nothing else. If you have sense and care for others you would do the same. We all want to get ahead of our lives and reach the destinations fast and safe, but just that there are people have no life or a mind for daily life thinking I’m not doing anything wrong by driving slowly, in the left lane. Yes, you are not doing anything wrong, but what you are doing can cause accidents, indirectly, maybe directly by your action. Almost all highway accidents happen in the left lane, almost. How many time do you see highway accidents happen in the right lane? or middle lane? almost none. People just dont care. And this is the American way.
Riding in the left lane at or under the speed limit is wrong for many reasons if the lane to the right is clear and you are not passing slower traffic. If you do it because you think you are safer, you could be proven dead wrong. For those that believe they are the citizen enforcers of the posted speed limit by hindering faster traffic, there will always be someone that wants to go faster. If that someone is an aggressive driver, (and don’t we all know people who are?) who cares little for their own safety and much less so for the safety of others, they are going to tailgate, weave, pass too closely and otherwise drive in a manner that endangers the safety of others. Don’t aggravate an asshole. We all know what real assholes are capable of when irate. Bottom line, no matter how fast or slow you are going on a multi lane highway, if you cannot bow to logic and common sense on behalf of your own safety, do it for other drivers, if you are not passing and the lane to the right is clear, move over. Doesn’t cost a thing. The life you save from the actions of an aggressive motorist may be your own.
Hi everybody, This is a…le driver as many would call me. Like has been stated in other comments- Why dont you just drive in the right lane? It is a simple movement of your hand and you can cruise and reach your destination no problem. Your ego is your greatest threat in traffic safety because that feeling of “I’m doing the speed limit so hell with everyone behind me can F off” is nothing compared to me behind you having the feeling of “Who the F you think you are you F’n piece of …”. Then I get more and more angry until I am willing to properly victimize you to teach YOU a lesson. There are many like me and some are quicker to rage than I am.
Even if you’re making good time going 75 in a 70, you shouldn’t be camping in the left lane a you approach the Buick, either. Keep right unless passing.
I just rage-typed a question into google about left-lane slow drivers, and this article came up. I read it, and I’m glad to see I’m not alone. I actually feel much better now. Thank you!

These laws are idiotic, increase the hazards of the road and are simply bad policy with no basis in sound science.
