Interesting article. I represent injured workers in comp claims. I definitely believe insurance carriers can improve the medical treatment process and see a natural reduction in opioid prescriptions. Injured workers are often faced with needless delays in getting appointments or treatment approvals. Needed non-opioid treatments are often denied without a real justification. Whether these needless delays or denials are the product of a carrier’s bureaucratic red-tape or a short-term desire to save an immediate cost, the end result is that many workers suffer pain that becomes chronic. The provision of treatment like physical therapy, devices, and other non-opioid care needs to be provided without delay. For patients with co-morbidity issues, treatment that keeps the patient active and works within the context of other health issues, is also a positive for all parties.
