The years of waste and neglect are having at least one positive effect; slowing down the development of driverless cars. The only people who want these are the government, police and car manufacturers. Most ordinary citizens do not fall for the “safety” line which has served many years now as the all purpose excuse in numerous power grabs.

The auto industry has spent years making cars easier to drive and “dumming” down the driver. Most drivers under 40 today don’t even know what 1&2 are for on the gear shift, nor would they know how to check their own oil. Add to that the wonderful technological distractions that come standard in today’s cars like GPS, satellite radio, cell phone hook ups and even video screens and we’ve deliberately produced the most distracted and unsafe drivers in the history of the automobile. Instead of driverless cars why not remove some of those imbecile enhancements and make people start focusing on their driving again. If you want a real safety feature put a satellite signal blocker in every car.

I disagree that the only people that want this is government and police. You must not have any older family members that are no longer able to drive? I am hoping that by the time I may not have the reflexes or eyesight to drive (at least 20-25 years I hope) self driving cars are save and reliable and ubiquitous and affordable.

As far as our crumbling infrastructure, yes, we need to focus on this country. Sorry for going political, but… we’re spending $600 billion on the pentagon, most of that to protect OTHER countries, not the US. We spend billions more rebuilding other countries. If we stop being the world’s policemen we can take care of America and Americans.

I live in a rural area, and regularly travel across many other rural states. I would guess that the majority of “secondary” roads, at the county level, and most residential streets do not have painted lane markings. if this is an expectation/requirement of driverless cars, it ain’t goin’ to happen!

What happens in locations where the weather is not always mild? Here in the Great Lakes basin, roads are snowy for several months out of the year. If the tech requires lane markings of certain reflectivity, what will these cars do when faced with roads that are snow-covered (even after plowing)? Add reflected sunlight and it sounds as if the tech will not be able to cope.
