The fact that NASA has not been deeply involved with the SpaceX investigation may stem from the fact it did not launched from a NASA Pad as the Orbital flight did. The Orbital disaster caused significant damage to the NASA launch pad whereas the SpaceX explosion did no damage. There are differences between the two accidents.

Nasa Is keeping a close eye on the investigation. They have a vested interest in Spacex succeeding. Nasa also understands from working closely with Spacex these past 6-7 years that the company does not screw around. And that unlike a government operation Spacex understands that their very existence depends on them being the best at what they do. The members of Congress who are the most concerned are the ones who’s lunches are paid for by the UAL lobbyists. If Congress was truly concerned about the health and safety of America’s space program they would fully fund Commercial Crew.

For the record, this investigation is being done entirely by the book. NASA is very much involved as the primary customer and is working closely with SpaceX. There was no loss of life nor property damage as a result of this incident which legally means it is then handled by the FAA working closely SpaceX. The FAA licenses commercial launch providers and SpaceX’s return to flight status depends on determining the probable cause of the mishap and taking appropriate actions to remedy. SpaceX has also been working closely with the DoD. Return to flight status can only happen with FAA approval. What is really going on here is that the ‘Honourable’ GOP Members of Congress in question are on bended knee polishing the nozzles of their lobbyist overlords. All of them are in the pocket of aerospace contractors that just happen to be direct competitors of SpaceX.
