Farmers Claims Data Reveals 70% of Hail Claims Occur April Through June

According to data from the Farmers Insurance Seasonal Smarts Digest, extreme spring weather brings a significant increase in damage to cars and homes across the country between April and June. big hail

The new report, which examined Farmers claims data from 2013 and 2014, found that:

  • Nationwide, nearly 70 percent of all hail-related comprehensive (non-glass) auto insurance claims during the year occurred during April, May or June.
    When looking specifically at the spring months, hail accounted for 42 percent of all comprehensive auto claims during the quarter.
  • Spring also accounted for more than one-third of all homeowners claims nationally during the two-year period, with the April-June seeing a 52 percent increase in homeowners claims over the Jan-March.
  • Water-related claims were the largest cause of claims with nearly one-quarter (24 percent) of spring, while hail accounted for 21 percent of all homeowners claims filed during the time period.
  • Oklahoma experienced around 90 percent of non-collision auto claims and more than 60 percent of homeowners claims filed during the spring.
  • Eighty-six percent of Nebraska’s non-collision auto claims and 65 percent the state’s homeowners claims were related to hail.
  • South Dakota experienced significant hail damage, too, with 87 percent of its comprehensive auto claims and 60 percent of homeowners claims being tied to spring hail.
