Scott first of all thank you for sharing this insightful article with us. I’ve been working as a real estate agent in Boston for over 10 years and I’ll have to agree with you. When several people share a flat and something has been damaged in the property it is very difficult to know who is responsible and thus the landlord will have to pay for the damage. In New York 72% of rentals are illegal according to this article. These illegal landlords often share their house with strangers, Scott, and this is a dangerous situation to find yourself in. In fact, when you open your doors to a total stranger you may be renting your spare room to a criminal and something bad may happen to you. But we can also consider the situation from the other perspective.
