Lithium ion batteries are a tough one today most insurance companies don’t realize their exposures unless its pickup on a loss control survey or disclosed by the broker. NFPA and FM are working on fire safety standards related to fire protection, what’s difficult is lithium ion creates a chemical reaction that supplies oxygen, combustion via chemical reaction and fuel so it becomes a self sustaining fire that’s difficult to control. I think the best is yet to come related to the subject!

The PHMSA final ruling on the transportation of lithium batteries and the September meeting of ICAO Multidisciplinary lithium battery transportation group are considering performance packaging as a method to reduce the risk from transporting lithium batteries. There are materials reported to be effective at containing run away lithium battery events. The fire from these events is of great concern and there are ways to vent the fumes overboard.

Lithium Prevent is tested by an independent lab and has been evaluated by NASA to be able to contain a run away lithium ion and metal battery fire to a single point, thereby limiting fume development. The thermoplastic material is injection molded into many types of containers for battery packs as well as for transportation needs.
