What if a person was driving his car and hit a motorcyclist and the motorcyclist was hurt? The person driving the car was ticketed for reckless driving and had insurance on another car, but had put the license plates for their other car on the car in the accident to save insurance on the newer car in the accident. They had been driving this car for over a year with the plates and stickers of their old car. Can the motorcyclist still sue their insurance company?

Hi. I live in BC Canada. My question is I am selling my off the road car. It is not licensed for the road. I have been asked by some prospective buyers to take it out with me or without them for a test drive. I am uncomfortable with this. If I was stopped by the police would I be liable or the driver of my uninsured vehicle.

I have multiple vehicles: sports car, camping van, pickup, RV, a few pop-up trailers. But i work from home, & only drive a few times/mo. Can’t (how?) can i get just “w/ the person” liability, so i don’t have to pay for multiple vehicles? I’m only human, just 1person; i can only ever drive 1 vehicle/time. My quotes should be 200$/yr, not 2k/yr… Any help? (iowa & ill. registered, but willing to move…). Thanks.

Hi, anyone know which insurance companies will insure unlicensed drivers? It’s always been cheaper for me just to pay the ticket every few years, but i hate the cops getting a chance to ego-trip, so i’d be willing to fork over the xtra dough for official ‘insurance’. Any1 know which co(s) would be willing to take my $, instead of the state? Thanks. unlicensed/expired 20+yrs… (the safest kind).

Thanks for the article, it’s comprehensive (end pun) and easy-to-follow and helped me correct a gap in my insurance. I only have one request: please change pronouns “he” to “their” or something similarly neutral. Since I’m owner and driver in my household, reading “he” in your otherwise well-written article is jarring and a mistake for me, and will be for half the readers out there, too.

This is all still confusing to me.
I was in an accident where the driver of the other vehicle was clearly at fault and the police report states/backs that up. The person driving the vehicle was not in the insurance policy.
State Farm ( insurance that is associated with the vehicle that hit me) is saying that because the person that was driving isn’t listed on the policy that they (State Farm) are not liable for covering the cost to fix my car.
Can this be right? Am I just out of luck?

I just wanted to thank you for helping me understand more about car insurance. The section about others driving the owner’s vehicle with their permission was really interested to me, especially the case you presented of a family member driving the vehicle may only get a limited amount of coverage. I’m kind of interested in learning more about the exceptions to these, as well as other factors that are considered. To me, it sounds like it could be useful information to know if you are sharing someone’s car in a college/dorm setting.

Help!! My daughter is leaving for graduate school out of state (NJ) and will be driving the vehicle which I currently own and have registered in ME, but she is making monthly payments to me to eventually own it herself. I have her listed on my policy as a driver but my insurance company which I have been with for 20 years (broker) said that they can not insure the car since it will be out of state and that it needs to be registered and insured in the state she will be attending college in. I am so confused since everyone I talk to tells me that they have their kids on their insurance and they are going to college out of state with a vehicle registered in their home state. My daughter has no intention to reside in that state and is paying out of state tuition! Hope you can answer these questions! Thanks!
