Unfortunately, the article makes no reference to the type of surgery. My understanding is that there are basically two alternative types of surgery, one being to fuse the two vertebrae either side of the hernia, which whilst providing relief in the short term presumably places greater strain on the neighbouring vertebrae, and the second one being the replacement of worn vertebrae by prostheses. Not being a doctor, I do not know whether this second method also has disadvantages, but it would have been interesting if the study had commented upon this aspect.
