This is interesting, especially in light of the fact that they’re not even counting the low-to-moderate risk homes.

Given that these airborne embers are known to travel miles and start new fires in homes, consider how many homes are at risk simply because of their proximity to the forest. While 5 million is a lot of homes, our company is betting that the actual number of homes endangered by wildfires is actually far higher. Either way, it’s a conversation that will be more and more frequent as we enter into the next fire season. If you think your home is located in a high risk area, start the mitigation now. It’s never too soon to prepare.

It has been great to see how many people and communities have stepped up to meet this challenge. I have seen volunteers that go out every weekend and cut brush around the homes of folks who are too old or too broke to do the work. I have seen science based building codes go into effect in Los Angeles County. I have seen zoning finally become a topic of conversation at the usual post-fire finger pointing contests. Things are changing. People are becoming aware of the science behind the issues. There is hope.
