Can Tornado Alley Become Safer? Yes, Within Limits

    IF you want to preserve life over property, then states will have to change, and enforce, building codes for personal and commercial properties. State Farm has an allegedly “tornado proof” building in Bloomington IL that has not been field tested. The design is not as pleasing to the eye as one would want, but in order to be “safe” concessions must be made for commercial applications.

    For personal, or homeowner, property there has to be a “safe room” that becomes a part of all new construction by building code. And, when permits are let for reconstruction of damaged property, the code improvements must also call for “safe room” construction.

    Insurers cannot control the weather; neither can government. These storms go where they want to go and there is nothing that can be done to change that.

    The question will be, who pays for it and at what cost? Government can mandate people to be safe and install all of the latest technologies to make them safe, but government cannot pay for it. If the people cannot afford it, and insurers cannot pay for it – it’s not going to get done. That’s reality.

    “insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results”.
    the human race is insane. we continue to build in flood plains, tornado alley, hurricane exposed coastlines. and expect to be able to buy “affordable” insurance to cover the exposures.

    Insanity. I worked for a couple of decades in the Insurance industry and learned that they are usually a few decades behind the times.

    Tornado proof homes have been being built in the USA for a few DECADES. They cost about the same as any custom built stick house but have a MUCH lower TCO., paying for themselves within 15-20 years. FEMA designates these as “near absolute protection from all natural disasters.”
