Note that California seniors and some other driver classes are required to take an eye or reading exam. The charts are on the wall of DMVs and the procedure is for the examinee to cover up one eye and read a given line of letters. Then the other eye is covered for the same procedure. I asked DMV in Sacramento why there is a requirement to read the letter with one eye covered SINCE NO ONE SEEMS TO DRIVE WITH ONE EYE COVERED??? DMV did not have a response. STUPID!!!!
Great comment, Mike! Super stupid test and I hope that’s not how they do it up here in Oregon. My elderly mother is going in today for testing and she’s very concerned about getting her license renewed since one eye is not so great. The other is perfect!
I have to chime in on the two prior comments. I can see why covering one eye at a time is helpful. This will give a guage as to the range of vision (or lack thereof) the prospective geriatric driver has.
I wholeheartedly hope that every state adopts some type of screening for their aging drivers. I’ve handled far too many claims involving an aged driver whose eyesight and/or perception could resulted in fatal consequences.
I have monovision, which means i read with one eye and see distance with the other. My distance is 20/20, my reading is done without reading glasses, but were I to try and cover the distance eye and pass an eye test, I could not. When taking an eye exam at teh DMV, they asked if I had monovision when I could not see distance out of the one eye and they were good with passing me. They knew exactly what it was.
Driving rules for reckless, young drivers? Speed demons and road hogs that run people any age of the road, maiming or killing them? Folks, let’s beef up patrol for the young and restless! Not all seniors are responsible for the terrible accidents!
If this is an issue in your area, for $40 each buy two dashCams from Walmart and record this happening, send it to police, tv station and mayor, Hopefully (but I doubt it) we can get some resolution from our tax dollars to stop this!
Tootsie,
For years I’ve heard about the legendary reckless punk drivers, but nearly every single time I pull up on an idiot doing 70+ on the freeways here in Phoenix and they’re texting, or doing 45 on the freeway and texting while people are in constant lane changes to get around them – I’m embarrassed to say they’re in my age group. Seriously, you’d think people who managed to survive to their 50’s and beyond would be smarter than that. Seriously, 80-90% of the texting & driving morons are long past the 16-24 group.
No age group is exempt from stupidity.
I did see a car of reckless punks create their own lane in the striped gap between the left lane and the HOV lane once. It was bumper to bumper traffic during a pouring storm at about 90 mph. Kept expecting to see them crumpled into a ball around each turn but St. George, the patron saint of stupidity must have been co-piloting that evening.
I have a neighbor in Arizona who is here taking care of her sister who is ill. She plans on returning to Texas in May but discovered this week her license expires on Sunday. Is there anyway to get an extension for her so she can return to Texas and renew her license. She did go into a Arizona DMV but was told to contact Texas DVM and request short term extension/renewal allowing her the time needed to return to Texas in the next four weeks. Any information would be helpful.
With several years of experience working in an emergency room the requirements for determining if older drivers are capable of driving are totally inadequate
how know where I can go online for the class dmv im 60 had licenses some year ago forgot to renew I want to get them now but forget something so anyone know where I can go
If an old driver is still in good health , then let them , not only drive , but drives and communicate experience to youngers and beginners commercial drivers about speeding concerns, low bridges under pass rules , official States scales bridge formula, log books , friendship with inspectors, courtesy with another drivers, specially four wheels drivers, weight limits, heights limits, skills to control refrigerated trailers temp; skills to tarp and tie up straps freight if a flat bed; placard correctly if a haz mat involved a dry or liquid load, and a lot of more things available in the Safety Regulations and Hazardous materials table. I think medical certificated older drivers are totally adequated, just because driver is only the begins on this career. Many people thinks drive an interstate truck is something likes to drive a car.
Old drivers hold a lot of experience instead. Driving a big truck isn’t like driving a car. Underpass, weight, city, tunnels, heights, lengh, hours of service, dual speed in some states……all restrictions

California issues drivers licenses to illegals who probably cannot read English! So, how do they read our traffic signs?
