This is hardly a surprise. The title of the article could hae been “Top 10 States with the Highest Population.” Of course you would expect these states to have the most money paid out in claims when they most likely had the highest amount of homeowner premiums paid, the highest number of policies issued etc… What would really be interesting is to see a comparison of number of dog bite cases as a percentage of homeowner policies issued. That night give you an idea of where dogs tend to bite first and bark questions later.
You can’t “average” dog bite claim payouts. Someone might get $1,000 for a nip on a finger or much, much more if they have a disfiguring bite to the face that causes them lifelong disfigurement, loss of an eye/eyesight, mental trauma, etc.
don’t go by highest population of people- consider highest POPULATION OF TRAIL LAWYERS in certain states who advertise for people who have been bitten by a dog & entice people to sue.
Or How about the title reading the states with the most irresponsible pet owner! Animals bite because of the owners, not because of the breed. When will people let that sink that into their heads.

And now for a completely useless and improper use of “statistics”…
Claims per 100 policies issues would be FAR more useful. Actually, that would be “useful”…
So, if my math is correct, the average settlement for a dog bite claim in California is $30,623.31? That seems a little high (ridiculous) to me…

The article is so full of holes that I think my 80# doberman could fall through it…
