Let’s face it the Chinese have their hands around our throat economically and are in a position to tell us what they will and will not consider compensable.
It would be great if Americans would stop purchasing their cheap products but that will never happen.
The first thing our family does is check where the product is made and then make a decision on purchase.
At least buying American gives some assurance the manufacturer will be held accountable for defects.
Your right, I don’t think the USA as a whole will stop trading with China because we owe them too much money, however we as individual citizens can make a conscious effort to stop buying their products. There are a few things almost impossible to find such as shoe & purses but for the most part if you look, you can find a product made elsewhere or even in America! We would bring some jobs back here too if we made buying American a goal.
The General Contractors who bid the jobs are doing what everybody else does, they are using the cheapest produts they can to either maximize profit, or produce the lowest bid to get the job. The only way to avoid this, is to ban the products all together, or find a way to make buying American made products more competitive. Unfortunately, the unions drove prices so high for raw product, you can’t buy American and be competitive.
Construction supply companies in the U.S., not the consumer, should be chasing the Chinks. If they stop buying, the Chinks will feel the squeeze. They need to be told to compensate Americans for the damages or we don’t buy from them.

The solution is simple, ban drywall (and other building materials) from China until there is a reasonable accomadation from them.

They won’t even talk about it. Here is just one more reason to support our own country first in any way we can.
