As is so typical in this country, nobody focuses on the “root cause”; they address the symptom of a problem. In this case, we have a segment of the population that is stupid, selfish, un-disciplined, and has no regard for the safety of others. The dangers of distractions while driving are already legend. The fact is, these idiots refuse to stop. It’s an addiction for them because they can’t focus on anything because of their self-indulgent lifestyle where they have to be entertained 24/7.

Warnings and petty fines aren’t the solution. Until and unless there’s a significant consequence it won’t stop. Our politicians and pathetically flawed legal system lacks the willingness to get tough. Look at the DUI problem. Same issues; no consequences.

Here’s what’s needed but won’t happen in our permissive society. Anyone caught texting while driving should get a $1,000 fine, 5-days in jail, a 90-day license suspension, and a notice to their auto insurance carrier about their careless driving habits. A second violation should result in double the original penalties.

I agree that making it illegal to text while driving will only serve to then have people texting below the dashboard line. What about making accidents caused by texting manslaughter and/or a felony?

Hit them where it will hurt. With any phone and driving offence immediatly take away the phone.
