    Surely she must be kidding!!!
The cost of logistics would bankrupt all the small grocers in the country. Another desparate politician coming up with hairbrained scheme’s to get some attention prior to election day!. For example, notice how Schummer has introduced all these conservative idea’s during the past 3 months from immigration to the federal flood program. What low life chameleons. Right after elections it’s tax and spend again. OUT with these turkeys!

As it currently stands, the FDA can not force a recall of food products. They can only request the manufacturer or distributor to recall. In this country we have had the expectation that the products for sale were safe, sadly this is no longer the case. It took months for the FDA to get the tainted peanut butter recalled. I think most retailers want to get the bad stuff off their shelves quickly, but when they’re not notified or not provided with complete product information, it is hard to do. The retailer shouldn’t be the responsible one, the manufacturer or distributor should be. However, they need to be up front with their retailers.

To all of these posters, have you ever been involved with a contamination or recall claim? I have and 5 people died due to e-coli. The Federal Government can’t make you recall a product at this juncture, but they sure will threaten you with fines if you don’t. All companies are not bad, but the ones that are unclean and or dirty need oversight. There has been no oversight over the last 8 years and these recalls are coming at us fast and furious. Who is going to watch these plants? Do you think they will watch themselves?

I HAVE seen the claims on children that contracted Ecoli 157 from a burger…young kids that the mom let share a hamburger in a well known fast food chain. the three year old died, the five year old had no kidneys left, among other things. the restaurant had been repeatedly warned about too low cooking temps, but did not improve its procedure, hence the death and disability.

This is a failute of the oversight function in both cases. If, as i do believe it is true, that the FDA cannot force a recall, then it should be pulishing its findings in every media outlet feasible so the public knows. THEN we pass laws gfiving them teeth to shut down, recall, and fine these businesses with fines that really matter.

We do not need the retailer to be put at a disadvantage when there are others who much more deserve to carry that burden.

Sue, while the issue may revert to “big government” when we are talking this misplaced law that is proposed, and yes, you are entitiled to your opinion, you contribute nothing to the solution of the issue at hand. Nor do you appear to have a well formulated opinion of the issue at hand. You are either preaching to the choir or falling on deaf ears with this monotonous chant thereby doing nothing but venting, and I would much rather hear your REASONED opinion of the issue at hand. Do you have solutions?

ok, we are fundementally sound that did we think about the costs outside of the box?

    1) she’s going to introduce the bill – costing her state the funding for a review and paper by her staff.

    2) then she is going to require the gov’t funding because now she needs to have a meeting of the various groups to define why. costly! (something like having a steroid meeting w/congress).

    3) once the bill has passed, then the bill has to spend time to be process by the president and then back to the FDA.

    4) now, it going to require all those lovely grocery stores no matter how big or small to get involved. more money spent, which means then the costs to the customers will go up.

    5) now, you might find these smaller grocery stores going to court to get their money back for having to create these signs in order not to attempt to pass costs to the consumer.

now, how much more money did we spend? how much more did the deficit go up because of the needless bill? how much money can we actually save because we don’t need any congressional hearings? what we need is to have our regulators currently take action from day one and not wait til after the fact. for example, look at the mining industry, oil drilling in the gulf?

can we as americans stand up and stop the costs from inflating?

I’d bet a week’s pay that none of the people posting comments here actually read the bill before posting their comments. As “Dilbert” creator would say -“Never underestimate the stupidity of the general public” – so perfectly exemplified by most of the posters.

No, because legislation is not written in English. Even the people voting for the bill are relying on someone else’s summary. Are you saying that IJ’s summary is inaccurate?
Pardon me as I squint to look up at you. I recently sold my high horse.
