The recent, unexplained, explosion in the Gulf of Mexico and the apparent loss of 11 crew, as well as a rig, should bring a new call for platofrm security.

While still only supposition, the reality of a rocket propelled grenade attack by boat, or shoulder mounted missle strike, against the oil platforms in the open seas needs to be examined as it is a real potential. With more than 4000 platofrms operating in the Gulf, as well as the rigs off the West and East coasts, this exposure needs addressed, NOW!

While Mr. Obama immediately responds with making “new” laws regarding rig safety, this is the first such loss in how many years of successful oil drilling? I would question the need for “new” safety regulations, but more of a focus on “protecting” rigs from potential terrorist attacks.

The response to this catastrophic loss, as well as the net result, has given our foes a small picture of the potential for devastation in hitting these sites in numbers.

Forget legislation, focus on rig security.
