Is anyone else sick of seeing eight, nine, and ten figure settlements accompanied with statements strongly denying any wrongdoing?
One has to love how a corporation can use its considerable financial muscle to file intimidation lawsuits against nuisance individuals, forcing people who do not have the funds to defend themselves against a large multinational to settle on terms which are favorable to said multinational (kind of like how Monsanto wages legal war against competitors like individual seed cleansers).
But when the company does wrong they can just throw money at the problem until they get a signed document stating that they didn’t do anything wrong (but despite “not doing wrong” they’re gonna pay out a couple billion in penalties!).
Our system of justice has devolved to the point where each party piles money on lady liberty’s scales. Whoever has more money to pay for endless appeals and experts, wins.
Great response Matt. This should give everyone something to think about. Unfortunately our government likes the big businesses that can intimidate you and I, yet have unlimited funds to defend itself (thanks to our government).
