It doesn’t take an “expert” to figure out that ANY distraction like eating a cheeseburger, making waffles, or reading a book while you are driving is STUPID. Texting is a very dangerous thing to do while operating your car but talking on a hands free phone is much safer than using a hand held.

MOTOR magazine predicted that the installation of wireless sets (radios) in cars would lead to a bloodbath on British roads because drivers were not capable of driving and listening to Rudy Vallee crooning at the same time. The Obamatrons couls save us some money by not wasting time on studying the obvious and passing more “feel good” laws.

Laws are already on the books…just need to be amended. Specifically wreckless driving – amend to include distraction. Then of course need to enforce it!

Here in CA we have a handheld cell phone ban…but ever day I see quite a few cells held in hand of drivers…even see a few police officers doing this while in their patrol vehicles….

Until a few years ago, driving a motor vehicle was universally regarded as a responsibility that DEMANDED the driver’s 100% attention and focus. Most “mature” drivers were raised with this paradigm and respect and follow it.

Younger generations and the advent of technology advances have eroded that standard of attention. Some people lack the ability to focus and need immediate gratification and entertainment 24/7. Don’t delude yourself into thinking a large portion of the population is forced to work behind the wheel. That’s load of crap. We have an un-disciplined society that lacks personal responsibility and common sense. All the laws in the world won’t stop people from playing with techno toys. Nobody perceives a significant consequence for ignoring laws. Maybe having your vehicle IMPOUNDED everytime you’re caught would get some attention. People just don’t get it.

Aren’t these “younger generations” a product of the “mature” drivers that supposedly respect the paradigm? Who in the heqq is supposed to be teaching them this respect? What happened along the way? Governments sure have a penchant for the obvious.

I agree Amy. A lot of the drivers I see talking on the phone, eating and even watching movies are older drivers. Bad driving is a multi generational problem.

agreed on all points. most importantly how are we as a society going to believe that it can be enforced, if we see the police doing the same thing? how many of you know that these policeman have computers sitting right next to them online?! so if they are looking at this and driving, is not different than those kids texting. here’s another interesting thing, if they are to enfoce this as they are supposed to if driving their own vehicle, then those cops driving in an hov catching those who violate that, should in reality give themselves a ticket! this truly sounds like we need to police our cops! how many of them do you see speed w/o lights? how many go through an intersection w/lights and then as they clear, they turn them off? sounds like many issues!

It is obvious who here talks on the phone while driving. The police are doing their job so having the computer is necessary to that. You don’t need to talk on your phone or text while driving to do your job. Before there was ever a cell phone people did their jobs while AT the job. Cops had radios in their car. The cop needs the computer to catch the bad guys so that is not a viable arguement. All it shows me is someone who doesn’t want this law passed. While these laws are hard to enforce they should be enforced heavily. The punishment should be similar to a DUI. That would get the point across.
