Where was this study done, the Redundancy Department of Redundancy? Teens that have free use of a car will OBVIOUSLY get in more accidents than teens without free use of a car…as will any demographic. Thanks for the info!
Unfortunately, here in Michigan we have an Owner’s Liability Statute, which encourages parents who wish to limit their exposure for liability to give their children their own vehicles in the child’s own name.

Please provide statistics on accident rates of teen drivers who have to buy and insure their own cars vs those who simply drive what their mummy and daddy provide.
And what’s up with only polling grades 9 through 11? The only 9th graders old enough to drive a car have been held back or failed a year or two.
I had a $200 a month car payment from Junior year on, and I had to make that payment myself. Dad covered the insurance premiums for me though. Still, making the payment myself made me not want to trash my most precious posession. I still have never had an at-fault accident.
What gets me is the 16,17,18yr olds driving $40,$50,$60k luxury cars. What ever happened to making your child work and save for their own car? At the risk of sounding like an old timer, I remember the days where you worked hard to buy a car and you took good care of it b/c you knew how hard you worked to obtain it.
These days kids feel like they are entitled to expensive cars and only end up wrecking them anyway. I still say every teens first car should be limited to 100hp and cost no more than $2500 AND they should pay for it, not the parents. Most times its going to end up in a scrapyard as a totalled mess anyway.
When my daughter turned 16, she grabbed my extra set of keys and thought it was fun time with the car. She got a rude awakening when I took them back and told her to ask to use it.
She is saving up now to buy my car from me and will have a down payment and monthly payments to boot.
What I want to know is what parents can afford to give their kid a $50,$60,$70K car anyway, and will they adopt me!!!!
When my daughters got their drivers license, they had to drive with me for 1 year due to how their birthdates fell. When they did get their full license I set down the rules, 1st ticket, license gone 30 days, 2nd 60 3rd until 18. 1st at fault accident where they did something stupid (run a red light)license gone until 18. I never had to take one away from either of them! To my knowledge neither of them have had an at fault accident to this day. They both have had a couple of tickets, but way after they “grew up” This was more than 20 years ago. They also had to buy their own cars if they wanted full access. I don’t think it scarred them for life like some parents think now days.
Most of us reading on this site operate under the OLD capitalist belief that if you work hard, you reap the rewards and could possibly get ahead. Unfortunately we are now in the New era of Croneyism er I mean Capitalism ie: take as much as you can from the middle class and keep feeding them bull____ promises that they’ll one day get to where you are. Don’t blame these kids, blame the rich parents and politicians.
I am one of the parents who gave her son a 4 year old Mercedes when he got his license. It was what I was driving at the time and I felt it was the only vehicle he would be safe in due to the vehicle weight and safety equipment. That was 5 years ago; he is now 21 and knock wood, has never had an accident & is still driving that vehicle…away at school too. He greatly respects it. If he had to save for a vehicle, he would most assuredly have gotten something that wasn’t as safe as what I started him out with and I wouldn’t be able to sleep at night.

Here’s one rule that has not failed me through 5 kids (my youngest is now a senior) – Mess up and you walk to school (4 mile walk).
