You are correct about “meaningful change”. Lowering BAC to .08 is not meaningful. They can kill/cause accidents just as frequently as the distraction of eating/texting/shaving/conversing(on or off the cell phone)/and so on (we used to call this careless driving).

Meaningful is to put a realistic limit out there that is designed to keep DRUNK people off the road and not stuff the coffers of the municipal/county/state govts for those that had a few drinks with dinner. I’m 41 years old and I still feel like I felt when I was 18 about having a friggen drink…. I feel like it is a criminal act and that someone is watching me if I am anywhere other than my own house having a drink.

The article states “In 1973, 7.5 percent of drivers had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) of .08 or higher. In the latest survey, that figure had fallen to 2.2 percent.”

I am surprised the difference isn’t larger. The legal limit in 1973 was 1.0 BAC in most, if not all states.

Though it is encouraging that the percentage of drivers driving drunk has decreased, I feel I should reiterate that “alcohol still kills 13,000 people a year on our roads.” And while it is important for police to remain vigilant, maybe there are things we can do to help keep ourselves out of harm’s way – like avoiding driving when there are the greatest percentage of drunk drivers (1am-3am) and avoiding roads known for having a high concentration of fatal DUI crashes (find out at http://duimap.org/). 2.2% is a fairly significant decrease from 7.5%, but that’s still roughly 1 in 50 people…which when you think about the number of people on a busy highway, is still quite a bit.

Yes 1 in 50 sounds like a bad number because you have been brainwashed into the idea that a BAC of 0.08 is drunk driving. Yes by legal standards it is, but by practical standards is it? 0.08 was not legally drunk 2 years ago, so what makes it that now? Federally funding is the answer, not IMPAIRMENT. Tell me what the percentage is of people that are a 0.15 BAC? I bet that number goes WAY DOWN.
So I ask again, if I am at a BAC of 0.08 today, I am legally drunk yet 2 years ago I was not. Was I any less drunk 2 years ago? Of course not.

Joey, go read FARS and get back to us would you troll.

DUI Map, please you are quoting the CDC/NHTSA when you claim “36 people die every day due to drunk drivers.”

Again, laws are being passed against the DRIVERS yet you are claiming 13,000 FATALITIES. That is inflation sir.

Go to FARS and look up exactly how many DRIVERS were over .08 and involved in a multi vehicle crash or crash with a pedestrian. The number is 2,440 DRIVERS.

Lets stick with counts instead of the old percentage methodology shall we. It really show how nominal the DD problem is. Unless of course it’s about raising money and creating a new class of criminal (1.6 million arrestees annually) that commits a crime with no victim. Sure, then I get it.

And Feel Good Laws, you are pretty much correct. If any poster here would bother to dig a little deeper into the FARS database, they would be amazed at the inflation coming out of the MADD run NHTSA.

O… M… G… did you just call me a troll??? Like, no way! As if!! I am soooooo not a troll!

I might be offended if you chose to attack me in an adult fashion, but considering you did not, and you condone drinking and driving, there are more important things to worry about in the world.

But I do respect your passion, no matter how misdirected it is. Let us hope that passion one day consumes you and you rid the world of your ignorance.

    ROTFLMAO!!!!!
