Part of the issue here is that it sounds like the job being offered involved a security clearance and access to classified material. Regardless of your take on the morality or civil-rights of this matter, gender-changing is unusual behavior exhibited in an extremely small percentage of the population. Access to classified material is partly given on the basis of whether you exhibit predictable behavior. It’s like underwriting and a gender-change represents a departure from the risk appetite for security clearances.
It used to be that if an operative was found to be homosexual, the government would terminate him or her because they felt the operative would be susceptible to blackmail. This guy/gal seems out in the open about his/her sexuality. I’m not sure what the problem really is, unless coworkers would be uneasy.
While this “guy” has every right to spit in the face of nature and try to surgically construct a female body, it doesn’t follow that the rest of the human race has to just rollover and accept “shim”. Even under the best circumstances, these shim’s are freakish and can make normal people uncomfortable. I wonder who footed the exhorbitant medical bills to make this miracle happen. Quite frankly, I take umbrage to shim deviating from normative rules of nature and society thereby making me uncomfortable. Maybe I should file suit agains shim for violating my rights.
WHOA…do minorities, homosexual’s and foreigners make you uncomfortable too? This man (about to be woman) has done nothing to hurt anyone per the article. Heck, he may have a fine sense of style and be the best looking gal in Washington.
GA: You missed the point. No, minorities and gays don’t make me uncomfortable because they haven’t altered their bodies like the tranny’s do. It’s totally un-natural very noticable. As I pointed out, shim has the right, but don’t expect the rest of the world to rollover and accept “its” decision.
I got to think that the Justice Dept., had a better defense than “transexual discrimination is not one of the named bases for a civil rights violation”. If the only reason was that others would be uncomfortable, then award is valid. If it would compromise security, then award is invalid. If they feared that he/she would alternate between restrooms, well…..
Marissa – I’m trying to see your side of things, but what about people that are disfigured or handicapped. They don’t necessarily look like the rest of us. Granted RuPaul is different, but I bet he/she would be more fun to work with than Archie Bunker.
