One of the main reasons I ride a BMW is the ABS. I can vouch first hand that when a cage rider does not pay attention, they do stop you very quickly and do save lives.

Now that HD has them as optional equipment on the Road King, that opens up another option when I buy my next ride.

Once you’ve used them once, you will never ride a bike without them again

First of all I think this is just another ploy to make the manufacturers of these items more money.Secondly ABS is not always the the safety net auto manufacturers have tried to make the consumer believe.I personally have experience where anti-lock brakes were more of a nuisance than anything. They do come in handy IF the speed limit is followed and they also work well on heavier vehicle lighter vehicle still tend to skid, sorry manufacturers!
I think that possibly cruise type motorcycles could possibly benefit but the so called croch rocket it makes no difference at all and as one of the other posters mentioned the cages are to blame for a lot of accidents involving motorcycles.
Driving a motorcycle you have constantly be on the offensive and defensive where driving a regular cage vehicle you can just drive so in my opinion anit-lock brakes might benefit larger touring bikes but forget the rest!
I think IF the decisions comes to the table the government and Insurnace Companies should not be the decision maker. The people riding and repairing motorcycles have more klnowledge than any engineer sitting at a drafting table.

I cannot believe that any review of the relative safety of ABS systems and crashes over the last ten years is completely silent on the increased horsepower of motorcycles.

ABS is excellent in cars – which too have grown in net HP over the last ten years – and I can remember some close calls on my bike years ago.

But as I travel the Garden State Parkway daily, all I see are mad bomber biker boys burning down between the lanes, playing dodgeball on bikes with a higher HP-to-weight ratio than a Saturn 5 rocket. ABS won’t help the average idiot speeding along risking not only his life and limb but everyone around him. It will just leave shorter skid marks.

Insurance companies – and maybe they do – should have heavy rate debits for high speed Sake burners. Or bike makers should have speed / torque limiters which would keep riders within Earth’s atmosphere. And not on an express to the Bridge of Sighs.
