This is funny. I wonder if they just made this prediction because at this moment since Louisiana was just hit by Gustav (letter G in the alphabet) I believe there are currently 4 tropical storms in the Atlantic of which 2 are hurricanes Hanna and Ike. I wonder how much he gets paid to make this prediction. I do not even need to have a degree to know there will be tropical storms in the Atlantic in September which is the heart of hurricane season – DUH!!!
Hold on, Lou. Notice they didn’t say “at least” five tropical storms. Looks like they’re betting that in the next three weeks, there’ll be practically no new activity. I’d say that’s going out on a limb.
Every time Dr Gray is quoted the question comes up about forecasting hurricanes from the Mountain West. On the surface that would seem to be an illogical spot to guesstimate Mother Nature.
Dr Gray was on the faculty of Colorado State University. CSU is home to a large weather research department. He specialized in hurricanes, however, the school researches other phenomenae like lightning strikes. Why?? That area of the Rockies is the second most active place in the world for lightning. The Front Range of the Rockies is also a VERY active spot for hail storms.

And they get how many hurricanes in Colorado?
None. You would not expect PHD’s in climatology to be dumb enough to live in Florida or the Gulf Coast would you?
