I like it and hope other cities adopt the same requirements in the future. These types of events naturally draw huge crowds of protesters with all the risk associated. There’s no reason the tax payers should have to foot the bill for events resulting from a political convention. Make the parties pay.

Based on this article, this covers the cost associated with lawsuits regarding police brutality, etc. I would bet that the city still had to pay for the extra police presence.

That part is usually in the standard use agreement – the convention should have been charged for it.

I can understand charging the convention for police presence in the immediate vicinity but do they also charge for police required to handle the moron vandals that are prowling the city?

Is it just me or does it seem likely that the defense costs alone will exceed the premium?

You know that nutjobber activists will sue sue sue. That one lady is considering suing just for getting handcuffed while hanging out with people who are opposed to ALL government.

400 lawsuits from NYC convention? If this one draws that many suits, that’s under $3K average for costs AND judgements per plaintiff. Granted, a fair amount of them will be all repped by common counsel, but still.

I think an underwriter somewhere is gonna lose his/her job on this one.
