Hurricane forecasters have a 1 in 3 chance of getting it right. Either below average, average or above average. We know what makes headlines. Above average has been forecasted every year for the past four years. How many hurricanes hit the U.S. in the last two years? One.
Good call in not playing the numbers game.

With 15 named storms, 2007 WAS above average. Three tropical storms (Barry Gabrielle, and Olga) and 1 hurricane (Humberto) made landfall in the US. Central America got it worse, including an unprecedented two category 5 storms in the same season.

“Above average” has been forecase the last 4 years, and has been accurate in 3 of them.

Two Cat 5’s in the same season is not unprecedented, but IS extremely rare.

I think it’s a much better idea that they build shelters in these areas than to do the mass evacuations… however the shelters are going to need to be reinforced & the funding to build & maintain them should come from the folks that choose to live in that area.

It might be a good idea to build additional shelters that are designed to withstand hurrican force winds, a bit more inland as well, to have a place for the first responders to use as a main gathering place, so that they can have a place to stay & rest between shifts.

But that’s just the opinion of an old woman that thinks it’s the responsibility of the homeowner to choose where they want to live & have insurance coverage or not, based on how much they want to keep it or build it back if it is blown away!
