What is lacking here is the understanding of the enormity of the problem. It does not only affect Oregon and California. Only 50% of the salmon that leave the Columbia River basin and return to sea go south to Oregon and California fisheries. The other half proceed north to Washington and Alaska. Salmon studies are showing an equal decline affecting fisheries in those states as well.
I see in the article they’re only talking about a “Fishing Failure”..With Closures beginning in June of 2005,a total closure in 2006 and an absolute NO-Show for Salmon in 2007 there is an undeniable “DISASTER”!! They need to either quit managing the Salmon fishery or help with Funding so that we can move on to something else until they figure out what needs to be done.In 2006 there was an awful lot of Salmon that showed up on the coast. But,of course we couldn’t harvest them because of the supposed low numbers of Klamath four year olds.It turned out they were wrong about that. They then opened up the whole coast with NO restrictions in 2007 and with the low water inland the following winter, there was a complete “NO-SHOW”.It seems that we are either at the end of what was once a great natural resource or we are victims of bad timing and wrong predictablity on the part of our Salmon Managers. In any event it is the absolute ruin of The Salmon fleet. We need to get the Compensation that was granted last year with multipliers so that we can at least move on to something else.I’ve been a Commercial Salmon fisherman for 28 years.I’m being pushed out of business by these closures. My wife and I have Over $450,000 dollars invested in our fishing business if we get some assistance on this matter we can survive. If not,We are Sunk..People like us are “AMERICA’s MINERS CANARY”.If our business is allowed to die, then theres not much hope for the rest of this Country…
