Good first step with the best of intentions. Giving someone a free detector is one thing, but insuring they know how to properly install and maintain it is another issue. Improperly placed, they will go off from cooking, causing the residents to pull the battery. (and probably never replace it). When the battery dies, will these people go to a store, purchase another one, and install it? Trailers will never be safe when fires are involved.

Unless these people have their heads in a bucket and don’t watch TV or listen to the radio, why would they not see/hear the messages that could be broadcast about proper placement, battery replacement, etc. Oh, forgot, nobody pays attention to public service announcements (sometimes not even me).

Radio and TV are constantly doing PSAs about Smoke Detctors and battery replacement say on your birthday for example. But the bottom line is “you can’t fix stupid”. The simplest and FREE item to save your life requires little maintainence. And yes, I too have fallen into the battery trap. Not replacing a battery because of nuiscance alarms, instead of moving the detector to a better location. I should know better! I’m moving it today!
