I didn’t realize that the Kentucky Darby was raced in a mine.

How did the track owners manage to dig a circle underground? And doesn’t it freak out the horses, all that dark and noise?

Do they make the horses wear headlights, like miners used to do long ago? Wouldn’t that burn their ears?

It does make sense, though, because jockies need to be short, due to low mine roofs.

Do they just point the horse at the light at the end of the tunnel? What if it turns out to be another horse, heading the opposite way? Sounds like the local diner would be having a special on Tunnel Kill Colt.

I also never understood how families could “lose” a miner. Unless, of course, they got lost and never wandered out. If they don’t come out, why are they called “lost”? Is there a chance the miner WILL come out?

Wouldn’t it be easier to say to the kids “Dad perished” instead of “Dad was lost in the mine today”? Don’t kids need finality? If I were the kid, I’d ask Mom when they would expect to FIND Dad.

It’s not just miners. Old folks always talk about how they just lost “Charlie”. What, did they forget him at K-Mart? That’s why they have those extended shopping carts with the little cars at the pushing end – so you could buckle Charlie in and NOT lose him.

Or, maybe Charlie wandered off in the woods and he couldn’t find his way home? What, no Boy Scouts around?

I’ve even noticed how few kids grow up in Boy Scout troops nowadays. Not like it used to be when I was a kid. Back then, we could pretty much ALL find our way back to the campsite. Instead of being called “lost”.

As for lawmakers scrambling to approve sweeping safety legislation. Heck, if they’re going through the trouble of all that scrambling, why don’t they make an omelet with all those eggs? Or did the dyslexic reporter mean that they were safely sweeping up the scrambled lawmakers? That sounds more logical. A LOT more logical.

    I am too confused.
