well, i think that most drivers do not know how to drive in that weather, unless you drive in it majority of the year. folks that live in the new england area, alaska and north of the midwest area, these folks are and should be familiar with this kind of driving. but those in the lower areas whereas they only see snow/freezing whether approx 0-3 months, definately have no clue in most cases. that is like asking those whom have a 4×4 think they can drive on ice, when in reality, 4×4 is just like a 4×2 on ice…

Another USELESS article. And who didn’t know this? Try driving in Atlanta when it mixes black ice and/or half an inch of snow and people who can’t already drive in good weather. Jeez!

You can’t excuse people on the basis of only having freezing weather a few months out of the year. The fact is, the younger generations have no interest in learning about the mechanical and operational characteristics of an automobile. I would categorize this as laziness and stupidity. Motorist have a responsibility to know how to handle diverse conditions. We shouldn’t be cutting them any slack. They’re either competent, safe drivers or they aren’t.

Just another study that proves that half of our population is profoundly stupid. I sure hope this wasn’t gov’t funded. I mean, we have people driving that have no clue how to use a turn signal, throw cig butts out their windows in the middle of high fire season and routinely shift lanes without ever bothering to see if someone is beside them or behind them. It makes you wonder how these people survive as driving is not the only thing they are clueless about.

it’s like some folks get a vehicle and forget everything they were taught. signal before turning or changing lanes. they think they have the right to the lane and just move in when there is barely any room for them and yet, if involved in an accident — your at fault and not them… the other item is when you turn, right lane to right lane or left to left…not as far as i can move over, because if someone is coming from the other direction they do have a right to their lane. i have seen people drive w/o headlights at dark only because they can so well with the street lights. do these folks not have a clue about the switches in their car? oops, forgot – they do know about the switch to the CELL PHONE! another item i fret over…i laugh at those whom think it’s ok to toss a cigarette butt or ashes out the window – are they afraid of the smell or cleanup? they chose that habit so why send it to the rest of us…

Actually I think 4×4’s are worse in freezing conditions except when chains or studded tires are used.

Driver’s ed is disappearing from schools at an alarming rate and many schools that still offer it have made it an optional course instead of a requirement.

Then you have parents who don’t know how to drive themselves and then you get… study results like these.

We can tell you what Paris Hilton had for dinner, but we don’t know how to drive in winter… LOL (but crying a little on the inside)

We had a good dumping of snow here in Iowa over the weekend. On a five minute drive from my house I saw 10 people on the cell-phone while trying to negotiate the slick snow covered roads. Even those of us who see it frequently can still be idiots.
