My concern about the situation of insurance companies in relatiion to the current troubles in the the sub-prime mortgage business is not that insurance companies will have a lot of extra claims to pay.
What worries me is that insurance companies have invested their cash-on-hand into mortgage based securities that may lose a great deal of value. Underwriters’ financial statements are quite obscure on the subject of the type and quality of their security holdings.
