Quite frankly doctors should only be pulling those extreme hours in a catastrophe. I want my doctor well rested and able to think. It scares me that I might go into a hospital and be treated by a physician who has been on duty for over a day, meaning they have been up for about two days. And I want this guy saying how I should be dosed or cut or whatever?

I agree! This study sounds like a joke! So they went from being “abusive” to just “insane” when they reduced the hours down to 80 per week? That’s no test; the doctors are still required to work inhuman hours! And this “trial by fire” just sounds to me like a bunch of old-timers trying to make sure new docs suffer as much as they did. Well, two wrongs don’t make a right. Plus, who loses when things turn out badly? THE PATIENT !

I’m with you on the abusive hours. My sone is a surgeon and know firsthand how hard they’re pushed to “pay their dues”.
On the primary issue, we should look at where they did this “study”…..Medicare and Vets Hospitals. The mortality rates for both are notoriously high due to the age and condition of the elderly. People are living longer now because of improved maintenance care so of course the mortality will show some small improvement.

These folks are killers. They are just waiting for that car accident so they can practice on a live one. IT makes me sick. That is why they stay awake for so long.

Well you should also take into account that for a doctor to be good he has to have seen a LOT of stuff, over and over. I would rather have a very experienced doctor who might be a little tired, than someone who only does it ‘part time’.

I don’t know about you, but 40 hours a week for most people is “full time”. I just don’t want a doctor working on me who has been on shift for more than 24 hours, going on 36, and is dead on his feet. People don’t think well when they are that tired. There’s no good reason to do it. They will see plenty of stuff working 12-16 hour shifts if you like, with time to sleep and wash their clothes in between.
