You want a lot of these things hanging around. They do carry packs with them, but that’s only 1 hour of air. They need the large caches to give miners more time.

I’m against theft on general principle, but stealing air packs out of a mine is reprehensible. When these guys get caught they should have the heaviest book known thrown at them.

And the people stealing these air packs are the same ones that would absolutely need them in case of emergency. It is hard to believe that they are doing this, but when you don’t have many ehtics things don’t matter. Just steal a few, sell them and buy your beer to party with…

    What a bunch of crap..

Don’t these mines have any security? I really doubt that morons from the neighborhood are stealing these, it’s gotta be the miners themselves.

Sounds like an easily solved problem that will have catastrophic consequences if they can’t get a handle on it.

Why not build in a Lojack or some other type of GPS device?

There’s got to be a special place in hell for people who would steal these essential pieces of equipment. Look at what happened in Utah…I can’t imagine what it was like to be trapped in pitch darkness, running out of air to breathe, and not knowing whether anyone even knew you were down there or if there was help on the way. It sounds cold, but I hope that now, weeks after the mine collapse, the miners were killed instantly in the collapse rather than having to endure a long suffering demise. So sad….

Maybe if each miner was required to carry their own pack into the mines to have nearby during an emergency… how about they sign for one on their way in & check it back in one their way out? If they are missing at such quantities as listed, there probably easily carried & that way no one will be left down in the hole without one.

all depends on the size of these airpacks. I imagine that they aren’t too large but then something like that isn’t nesscessarly the sort of thing you want banging around either when working in tight spaces.

Too bad there isn’t a way for mgmt to assess the miners for these thefts. Then, they could police themselves. Hard to imagine they need to steal to supplement their income. Aren’t their wages relatively high and their cost of living relatively low?

Access to mines is restricted so somebody on the payroll has to be involved. It’s hard to believe that someone would knowingly jeapardize the safety of fellow employees to make a few bucks. Mine owners either need to tighten security and/or inspect all vehicles leaving the premises.
