Like you, I would not want an impaired surgeon operating on me nor an impaired driver sharing the road with me. That’s why there are additional restrictions placed on certain people regarding marijuana and other substances. For example, truck drivers are randomly tested no only for illegal drugs, but also alcohol.

The legislation itself does not prevent people from abusing substances. It just gives the government a legal recourse for processing these individuals when they’re caught or when they’ve caused harm to someone else.

Still, you make a good point in that surgeons, law enforcement officers and other certain groups of people should be held to a higher than average standard when it comes to mind-altering substances.

But to single out marijuana… I don’t know. I think there’s flawed logic in that.

Prescrption pain meds and alcohol have very intense and sometimes enduring effects on a person in terms of alterness and mood.

Frankly, I don’t understand why marijuana is illegal considering there are several -legal- substances which are equally as used and often as abused as pot.

I see legalized marijuana as a potential form of revenue for states via taxation; and as a potential form of revenue for those who would own the crops.

The fact that it’s illegal clearly doesn’t prevent the people who want to do it from doing it. I also don’t believe that making it legal will lead to significantly more people using it than those who already do. That’s just my opinion, of course, but I think there is some common sense behind it.

At any rate, abuse of anything can lead to trouble. I just wish I knew more about why marijuana has been so villified by the government and the media when there are legal substances which are just as dangerous, if not more so.

Who ever heard of a bunch of stoners causing a riot? LOL

This is kind of a joke and an obvious double standard. This implies it’s okay to be an alcoholic or abuse prescription painkiller. The key word is “illegal.”

No surprise with restaurants- many restaurant owners like to powder their noses or smoke dem marijuana cigarettes.

All I can say is, girls, is that the best we can do? We need to work harder.

Really, they say that men were more likely to report drug use. Doesn’t mean women aren’t using as much as or more than men.

Legalize marijuana and most of this “problem” is resolved.

Or, we can beat the employee unmercifully, repeatedly, until he/she quits using marijuanna, especially on the job.

But seriously, you do not change laws because lawbreakers do not want to follow them. Being honest, is there a reason someone cannot follow this law?

Personally, I would not want a doctor performing surgery on me if he uses pot, even if only in social settings. Whether you believe it or not, it does affect your memory, among other things. I would not want a police officer using a handgun unless he/she is completely clean of illegal drug use either. I probably don’t even want an insurance agent handling my business if he/she gets loaded.

If you use marijuanna regularly, and your significant other hasn’t told you about how it affects you, it is because he/she isn’t clear headed enough to recognize it or just not saying.

Would you all please read how old this information is? My God, at best the basis for this whole article is 3 years old. This is one of the most worthless articles yet.

I would be curious to know what the breakdown of drug / alcohol abuse by income is. Just this year I stopped working my 2nd job waiting tables. So, with the fast food I did through high school and college I have almost 20 years in food. In that, I can say that drug use and alcohol abuse are very prevelent. I assume this is the same study I heard on the news last night that indicated the abuses of the service industry stand at 17% of all workers including mgmt. I have to say that number seems very low to me, and typically these folks do not make that much money (that is simply a generalization not an absolute as I know many servers end up making very good money). I know age definitly affects this study, but just curious if it’s more or less significant that income levels.

Where’s the link to this alleged research/study? I never said i was an expert either so stop spreading lies AD. I am just spreading the truth about illegal drugs, frack – google the history of drugs, one doesn’t have to be an expert to do that or to read and learn. Just trying to expand peoples horizon and dispel mytha that people like you spread.

No one has ever died from smoking pot (if you say people have then prove it or shut up) unlike alcohol and cigarettes and yet they are illegal. how do you know if i have cancer, HIV/AIDS and/or glaucoma. YOU DON’T KNOW ME!!!! Chemo f’ing sucks and pot relieves many more symptoms than regular, western medicine.

one more thing, i have worked in insurance for over two years; 2 jobs with large national insurance companies and now with a large international broker and i can easily say that at least half the people i have worked with and currently work with smoke pot. it’s much more prevelant than you think. even when i was a teenager and my dad worked at a large insurance carrier, i supplied half of his office with pot. so get over it.
