Please don’t misunderstand my comments as cold-hearted, but there is a bit of missing information here – how much will this add to the cost of a mattress?

The article doesn’t say, but companies have to recoup these cost someplace ’cause they surely “ain’t” just going to absorb the cost – it’s getting passed down.

If it’s $20 per mattress – not a big deal – but if it doubles the cost, now you’re hitting folks hard – and those that can’t afford the new mattresses aren’t going to benefit from the safety the government is trying to push.

Again, don’t misunderstand me to be cold-hearted – but 270 lives a year in a country with over 300 million people (.00009%) just isn’t a significant enough percentage to create new standards.

“If it saves just one life,” isn’t a sufficient reason to do anything. If that’s the case – then showers should be made safer.

CJ…I don’t think it’s cold hearted at all. Cost is an important component in everything. It would be nice if everyone drove cars with 5 star impact rating and in perfect working order (brakes, airbags, etc), but that’s just not the case. Hopefully, the added safety will come on the cheap.

Your post has nothing to do with this article and should be removed. Next time try to be relevant to the topic. How about something like this: what effect might this have on the Products Liability rate for mattress manufacturers? Maybe the savings in insurance costs can offset the increase cost of goods sold?

You took the bait rather well, I thought. Rosie has been missing for awhile, but now she’s back! Way to go, Rosie! Where’s Jewel?

In case you hadn’t noticed, this is intended for insurance professionals to comment on issues.

CJ makes a good point. To add to it, maybe the focus is all wrong here. The knee jerk reaction was to focus on the flammability of the materials. Instead, maybe somebody should look at the firefighters response protocols. Does anyone think trying to save a warehouse full of burning mattresses was worth the lives of 9 firefighters? This fire was already burning furiously when the FD arrived and they knew the walls and roof were compromised. Since it was not a risk to people or other buildings, the firefighters could have kept a safe distance, controlled it, and let it burn out. Their response needs to be considered in the context of what’s at risk, not to go charging in just that’s because what they’ve always done.

Time to put this to bed.
If you can’t afford a really good mattress you’ll just need to sleep on the floor. Cheap mattresses will be to expensive to make because of the follow-up lawsuits.

this is just our f-up’ed goverment trying to make themselves look like they care. 270 deaths??!! most people sleep with blankets, sheets, comforters, and pillows, would it not make sense to make these fire resisitance first? [i forgot, these are made in china, they can sell us ****] by the way i work in a small mattress factory and i believe this will put 15 people out of a job. also, i know of some suppliers who are fixing to run out of the flame block material!

My husband and I just bought a cal king Kingsdown mattress 2 weeks ago. At first it seemed fine, a little fiem but, ok. After about a week my husband was waking up in the middle of the night with numbness on the side he was sleeping on. He also had back pain. I have a call into Ethan Allen where we bought it. They said that they will have the manufacturer call us, which should take a couple of weeks. Meantime they said turn the mattress over. Well this mattress cannot be turned over. It does not have a flip option. It is a hard backing. Little do they know about there mattresses. We will see how it goes. I will praying!
