Amazing that so venerable an institution as Allstate could equate safe driving with having few accidents and not give at least a nod to population density. Sioux Falls has only 153 people per square mile. Fort Collins, CO has only 72. You really have to work hard to get into an accident there.
By comparison, Newark (rank 197) has nearly 1,500 people per square mile. Jersey City (rank 191), a very compact statistical area, has over 10,000 people per square mile. If you can go just a year in Jersey City without having an accident, you, my friend, are a very safe driver.
Density is a factor, but it cannot be 100% correlated due to the fact that high density populations have extensive mass transit systems. Many people in high density areas don\’t even own a car.
On the opposite end of the spectrum over 90% of people living in the lower density areas own at least one car. (percentage comes from an article I read a while ago. I am not 100% sure of its validity, but it is the best I have)
Having moved to Phoenix from Columbus, Ohio in 2004, the first thing I noticed was the horrible and careless driving habits by those around me. The only thing that saves Phoenix is the good weather. No snow, no rain. The locals have to try hard to have accidents.
