Toll roads tax the poor and middle class (in more ways than one) while reducing taxes for the rich.

Think about it and your place in it…

How does it reduce taxes for the rich?

It reduces taxes for the rich when the \”poor\” have to pay their fair share of goods & services received instead of making the \”rich\” subsidize their portion!

All the cars slowing down to pay and speeding up after paying. And the idling as drivers wait for their turn. With $3-4 gallon gas this is wasting more money than it brings in.

Basic civics lesson–this country has believed in progressive taxation for many decades. If you don\’t, you need to speak plainly and say it is \”unfair\” instead of offering some glib remark about what you claim is a fair burden on the poor and middle class.

Study the latest, partially surpressed US Treasury report on the benefits of recent tax cuts going to a tiny percentage of the population. Toll roads are a small part of this dismal picture.

By taking toll roads off the government books, the tax load is decreased for all taxpayers, with the rich benefiting the most under the current progressive tax system. (You do the math). The poor and middle class benefit the least and also have to pay tolls just ot get to work and to get their kids to school so they can try to get ahead.

As stock ownership in the U.S. is now greatly concentrated in the hands of a very small percentage, with the trend rapidly increasing, the rich benefit far more from the infrastructure paid for by all of us and do not pay their fair share.
And now we find the trucks owned by all those fine companies whose stock shares they hold run into us and kill us at toll plazas. The universe has a sense of humor or irony after all, it seems. And the current people in power are cooking up schemes to sell existing toll and non-toll roads to a Spanish company (e.g. Texas). I am sure there will be no influence peddling in these transaction–just ask formerly Texas connected Jack Abramoff and his buddies.

    Fair is fair.

My view is that the government does not belong in the toll road business at all. The infrastructure was paid for by the taxpayers and belongs to them.

Comrade Do: There should be more people like you to continue the struggle of the working class. It\’s like the song by Ten Years After says; \”…tax the rich, feed the poor, till there are no rich no more\”. Soon more than 50% of the U.S. will pay no tax directly, or indirectly through entitlements and refunds. Then the socialist feeding frenzy can begin leaving only the super rich, the poor, and the politicians who manipulate them both.

    Just a couple of comments.

I find it interesting that Connecticut needs to apply for Federal (tax dollars) funds to STUDY the \’open tolling\’ method.

Just fly a few folks to Chicago and meet with the Tollroad Authority. Illinois is in the final stages, this year, of converting the tollroads to the open toll method. Those with I-Pass transponders(similar to E-Pass and now able to be used on E-Pass tollways in the East)cruise thru multi-lane tolls (overhead \”readers\”) without even slowing down from the usual 70-75mph (speed limit = 55mph). If you need to pay cash, you leave the tollway and drive to an area where you stop at a booth.

Of course, perhaps Connecticut is just warming up for the application to obtain Federal highway funds to implement open tolls!?

Dearest Karl– You are one deep thinker alright. Yep\’n–let\’s all get our political philosophy, theory and practice from an antique, nineteenth century figure like Karl Marx and from third rate pop songs. Let\’s see those as the only alternatives and let\’s vote for the candidates bankrolled by the rich to pass laws written by lobbyists for the rich, and as long as nobody cuts off our TV, DVD, SUV, and toxic food environement, let\’s be happy with the situation.

    Missing from your incisive analysis:

\”leaving only the super rich, the poor, and the politicians who manipulate them both\” is the middle class, which if it doesn\’t change it couch potato ways and manipulation by the rich (who by the way manipulate the politicians and not vice versa–what a quaint notion!), will cause your prediction, will all its defects to become true–although not quite in the way you see it. Politicans manipulating the rich–give us a break…

Somewhere, Rove is laughing quietly into his sleeve. If we can keep them thinking in polarized, conventional, simple terms, we win…

Then the rich\’s feeding frenzy can accelerate and culminate.

Dear Everybody else: When ever I hear the same old liberal diatribe start up, I know the discussion rarely gets beyond bumper sticker pholosophy and pop song lyrics. \”Bush lied; yada yada\”. All of our \”leaders\” have strayed so far from Madison & Jefferson, they\’re nothing more than street names today. Butt Liberals (Democrats) have perfected it to a science. Marginalize a significant portion of the electorate by convincing them they are helpless and will suffer at the hands of the \”others\” without your protection. This and some creative voting techniques ensures your election to power. Now you tell the \”others\” that you can keep the first group out of their hair by $upporting you (money) and doing business your way (more money). With any luck, those in the middle will be so distracted, they will not form sufficient numbers to throw the rascals out. This has worked well for Ted Kennedy and Hitler; and his party\’s name was an acronym for National Socialism.
