As as Risk Manager, I am concerned by the statement regarding \”serious enough to report to risk\”. All wrong site surgery cases should immediately reported to a facilities Risk Management Department. Wrong site surgery is always considered a sentinel event.
I know of 1 case where the WRONG leg was amputated. Another case I read about in the paper where the WRONG \” LUNG \” was
removed.

There was a case many years ago in the hospital where I work where the wrong leg was amputated. The doctor discovered his mistake almost immediately, and thought it best just to go ahead and take the other leg off. The patient tried to sue, but was told by his attorney that he didn\’t have a leg to stand on.
I agree with Kelly. I was about to post the exact same reponse. When I was in 7th grade one of my fellow classmates had surgery on their knee, and the doctors recorded the operation and the classmate brought into science class for us to watch. oddly enough, we found out that the surgery was done on the WRONG knee.
I don\’t think wrong-site surgery is as rare as the report makes it look like it is. I\’m sure the \”reporting\” at least to the general public, of a wrong-site surgery is alot more rare !!!
