Yep, our government\’s response here could pretty much have been predicted. Evacuees can\’t go home yet, in NO, their apartment\’s contents have been emptied onto sidewalks for non-payment of rent, and their posessions scooped up by passersby, their temporary housing subsides get cut Dec 1…up a creek without a paddle…
And the illegal war we\’re losing in Iraq goes on bleeding this country dry so we can\’t take care of our own poor and desperate. This is a damn cold administration.

own way? There are some legimate needs but so many are just \”collect as long as
the government with shell it out\”.

The people affected chose to live in a fishbowl between a river and a lake. or on the coast of the Gulf of Mexico. Then natural selection rears its head in the form of a hurricane, but since apparently no one affected can take care of themselves, they think everyone else\’s taxes should continue to support them forever. Americans expect a combination of freedom and support that is impossible for a govenment to give. Either you have freedom and take care of yourself or the govenment intervenes in the form of increased regulations and enforcement to save you from your own stupidity and lack of preparation for the inevitable. I\’d rather have natural selection take out the idiots and live in freedom myself.

How long should the rest of us pay? I\’m not trying to be mean but they chose to live there, chose not to purchase adequate insurance and are choosing not to move somewhere else and start again.

It is a tragedy but it\’s time to move on.

Jobs abound here in Charlotte, NC. Cost of living is pretty low, housing is plentiful. We have had several families move from New Orleans already and we\’ll take more.

Call me cold, call me a Republican, call me conservative, whatever. We can\’t pay another $4billion or so for this to go on forever.

This is the land of the free and the home of the brave, not Russia or Cuba. Need a fresh start? Can\’t find a job? Join the Army; they\’re recruiting and paying bonuses. Got a gripe? Blame your parents, not George W., and certainly not FEMA. When someone lends a hand in charity, the proper response is a Thank You. Don\’t like the rules? Improve yourself or expatriate. Good news is Castro will take you. Bad news is the waiting list for an apartment in Cuba with electricity and running water is two years long–and you have to know somebody. Guvmint pay is always less than you\’d like, never as much as you think you deserve. Meanwhile, FEMA subs are bidding upwards of $25/hr for unskilled labor to move debris out of the Gulf Coast. Get for yourself or settle for what da guvmint gives you.

I GET YOUR POINT ABOUT IRAQ—I GUESS IT DEPENDS UPON WHETHER OR NOT YOU BELIEVE IN HELPING OTHERS FIGHT FOR DEMOCRACY—WE COULD BE ISOLATIONISTS! BUT THE EVACUEES ARE PEOPLE ALREADY LIVING IN A DEMOCRACY WHO DO HAVE A LOT OF FREE CHOICE, SUCH AS WHETHER TO WORK FOR A LIVING, PROPERLY INSURE YOUR PROPERTY, ETC. ON THE OTHER HAND, FLOOD INSURANCE SHOULD HAVE BEEN REQUIRED BY ANY RESPONSIBLE LENDER!

I don\’t think people realize that you can\’t have the best of both worlds. For those who don\’t – here are the choices:

    A. Socialist – The government will take more personal responsibility for it\’s people. However, parts of your life will be regulated requiring you to usually pay more in taxes to help out others (Universal Health Care, etc). You will sacrifice some indivisual freedoms and opportunites.

    B. Capatilist – This is what we are. You are self responsible and take on an entrepenural spirit. You have unlimited indivisual freedom and choice, but the government will not be as socially responsible. We pay less taxes, but take in more for ourselves.

There is nothing wrong with either form of government. There are good and bad things about them both. People have to realize that you can not have both. In this entire article it never once said that the people affected are searching for jobs. However, it did say a majority of them are in Atlanta (one of the leading job markets in the US). It\’s good to see their making great use of it. Mabye instead of relying on government hand outs, they could find a job, apply for a low interst mortgage through the government and stop riding their coat tails. You are in a capitalist society and should be held according to the way we are governed. Get off your butt and find some work – embrace our entrepenural spirit. Move to Canada if you want a hand out! (I can say that – I\’m Canadian and live in Atlanta)
