My husband works for an ATV dealership. Polaris, Bombardier and Yamaha all have very aggressive programs to prevent sales to customers for the use of those under 16 or even 18 (depending on the manufacturer). The manufacturers even do follow up calls on customers to ensure that they were warned that these are not for children. The machines have labels stating this and the owners manuals also state this. When are we going to start hoding parents repsonsible for their actions and not have federal regulations over something else.
I agree with you Cheri. My family and many of our friends are avid riders with children 9-16. It is very much the responsibility of the parents to ensure their children are safe and how they ride. I have seen first hand the tragedy of what can happen if safethy isn’t taught to young children. This article enraged me. Any sport whether it be football, skydiving, surfing, everthing has it’s has it’s own set of casualties and accidents. I’m sorry but 549+ of accidents, is only a slight fraction of the hundreds of thousands if not millions of families, individuals who are involved in this sport. My husband broke his ankle riding, but it was his own weight that caused it, is that what they conside accidents reported? It’s ridiculas what the Federal Gov’mt and people who don’t know nothing of family activites or the sport. Maybe they should get out with their families and realize it’s one of the few things families can get together and do.
I agree with the both of you and am also outraged at this policitical non-sense. I race motorcross on the weekends as well trail ride with friends. There is an inherent danger with any sport. When I am golfing I know there is a risk that I may get struck or killed by a golfball. Similarly when I am riding I assume ALL risk associated with it. That said, the parents NEED to be responsible. However, there are times when “things happen” while riding that cause accidents.
I do not believe its right for the Fed. Govt to put regulations on this sport and take away our freedom.
The government seems to be taking over the roll of parent these days. Parents should always be responsible for their children. I say no regulations. Let us have some freedom.
Thats is just what we need more government regulations to act as parent. Perhaps we can have the ATV police riding the trails. If they dumb enough to kill themselves, they are really saving the gene pool.
“Also, an all-time high of at least 136,100 people went to the hospital last year for injuries involving the four-wheel motorcycles that have a wide seat and low stand, and a third of those hurt were younger than 16.
In 2003, there were at least 125,500 injuries.”
We can argue all day long about the validity of these numbers, but 136,000 injuries is pretty significant. Let’s face it, if parents weren’t so irresponsible the government wouldn’t have to step in.

It is time for regulations. Good report.
