As a responsible parent, I pride myself on ensuring that my two chilren (3 and 1) are always safely and properly secured in our vehicles. But it never ceases to surprise and anger me when, on a daily basis, I see young children standing in the seat of a car with their face pressed against the windshield or rear window. Unfortunately, given the amount of available information it appears that this is caused by willful stupidity rather than common ignorance.
I glad to see what the statistics revealed, but all too often, I see toddlers/kids riding in front seats when the back seat is available, or riding in the backseat w/o a seatbelt or car seat.
Until law enforcement becomes more vigilant and imposes stiffer fines on parents/adults for endangering their children, we will continue to see severe injuries sustained by children, which are essentially avoidable if the seatbelts and child safety seats are used.
Furthermore, more states such allow the “seatbelt defense” to mitigate liability or damages on the at-fault driver, or impose some degree of contributory negligence on the negligent parent/adult who is operating the vehicle.
