Doctors for Medical Liability Reform (DMLR), a coalition of more than 230,000 medical-specialists, are asking U.S. Senate Democrats one question with its new full-page advertisements unveiled today in The Washington Post and Roll Call: What Do You Have Against Patients?
The answer: Trial Lawyers – Who reportedly line Democrat Senators’ campaign coffers to defeat medical liability reform.
Dr. Stuart Weinstein, co-chairman of DMLR, noted that the National
Democratic party, especially its members in the United States Senate, has abandoned America’s doctors and patients.
“People are dying because the Democrats in the United States Senate are putting special interest money ahead of the public’s right to quality health care,” Weinstein said.
DMLR urged all U.S. Senators to vote for cloture on S. 2207, “The
Pregnancy and Trauma Care Access Protection Act of 2004.” This is the third time in less than a year that the U.S. Senate will vote on whether to consider medical liability reform legislation.
“The House of Representatives has passed medical liability reform seven times since 1995 and President Bush has indicated he will sign a reform bill,” Dr. Brian Hancock, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, a founding member of DMLR, said.
“This bill will help keep emergency rooms across America open and staffed with the specialists communities need. If Senate Democrats fail to even allow the bill to be debated, the National Democratic party will have to explain to the voters why they backed personal-injury lawyers instead of patients.”
