This is a disgrace. What can citizens do to fight for better bumpers? It’s one thing for cars to be sculpturally beautiful. But if they can’t sustain low impact bumps, they’re badly designed from a functional standpoint.

Is this similar to what you describe?
I have wondered asbout the safety of the bumpets on this model.
Please email me your response as to safety of this bumper and its durability.

Ed Hirsch, what kind of car do you have? I agree the bumpers today on most cars are apparently horrible. I want an old fashioned steel bumper even if it is ugly, but where can you get that for a Toyota XL?

I’m all about this bumper thing. I have a 1987 Honda Accord LXi sedan. I love this car, unfortunately, it is coming to the end of its life….the bumpers on this car have withstood many rear-endings from unattentive drivers. I cannot find a car out there now that has bumpers anywhere near the quality that my Honda has. I’m hoping the car manufacturer’s change designs soon and go back to the prominent bumpers that protect the car instead of the smooth all-in-one look.

I have a 1988 mercedes E class. It has a very strong bumper with a black strip running through it. I have watched many modern cars parallel park next to it, bumping and scraping it and they come away worse off than I do. The black strip on my bumper can be replaced for under $100, but all I do is go over it with some tire black and its good as new. I cringe when I think about when I have to buy a new car:( Why can’t the finance guys at these companies hassle the designers about bumpers, instead off tire size?

In the last two weeks it thas been my misfortune to be able to examine three incidents of five mph vehicle collisions. In each case, the licence plate or the screws used to attach it, were responsible for the majority of the damage. If auto makers would design a more recessed area for the licence plate, or at least use smooth screws to attach them, much minor damage could be avoided.

Someone backed a trailer hitch into my bumper while my auto was parked and the bumper sustained an ugly two sided cut. I would have had to replace the whole assembly because of this, and Toyota should put the old style hard knock bumpers on its cars not wrapping it around for looks. This probably will put me into a better vehicle with a substantial bumper when I trade.

If you’ve been backed into by a pickup truck or SUV with a ball mount (trailer hitch) here’s an alternative to those ugly hitches: http://www.superbumper.com
