Tornado-Hit Ohio Town Will Spend $25,000 to Fix Sirens

July 30, 2014

A northeast Ohio community where two tornadoes have touched down this summer will reactivate its tornado warning sirens.

The city council in Brunswick, in Medina County south of Cleveland, voted Monday night to spend nearly $25,000 to get the sirens up and running again.

The city had shut them off six years ago after repeated attacks from hackers had the sirens sounding false alarms. Since then, the city has used an emergency notification system, sending severe weather alerts to phones and via email.

The cost will include upgrades to prevent hackers from accessing the system.

Minor tornadoes caused damage in northern Medina County in June and July. The first one damaged about 40 homes in Brunswick.
