Campaign finance filings indicate Ohio Republican Josh Mandel sold a vehicle disabled in a March wreck to an online auction company after withdrawing an insurance claim.
The 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee went for $938 to Copart Inc. of Dallas.
Mandel was in the SUV owned by his U.S. Senate campaign when it crashed March 5 near Toledo. That was months after Mandel lost his bid to unseat Democratic U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown.
As state treasurer, Mandel opts not to use state-owned transportation for official business to save taxpayer money. Federal campaign finance law prohibits him from using a Senate campaign vehicle for personal use or to run for a different office.
Mandel’s state campaign paid a rental fee for the Senate vehicle on June 30, months after it crashed.
