October 22, 2013

University of Michigan officials have green-lighted a $6.5 million track for testing automated vehicles.

The Ann Arbor News reports the Board of Regents on Friday approved the proposed 30-acre track. It will be located on the Ann Arbor university’s North Campus and will be part of the Mobility Transportation Center launched in May.

Officials say the goal is to refine and test advanced automotive technology such as self-driving vehicles in an environment simulating real conditions.

The board also increased the project budget for an addition and renovation of Michigan’s music and performance school. The roughly $1 million increase brings the budget to about $24.3 million.

The expansion of the School of Music, Theatre & Dance is being funded by an $8 million donation from philanthropists William and Delores Brehm.
