Good for them, they got what they deserve. I am sick of people hiring workers “under the table”. It’s nice when one of them gets slammed hard. I have always run my business honestly and it is hard to compete against all of the crooks out there who hire illegal workers, pay under the table and pay no worker’s comp insurance. These are usually the same businesses that don’t care about the safety of their workers either. They put the “con” in contractor.
I worked for years as a “sub-contractor” getting paid hourly, with the expectation of not working for someone else, working under supervision, come to work, take lunch, and leave at certain times, etc. One guy I worked with cut his finger off on the job with a miter saw; I’m sure he didn’t try to file a worker’s comp claim. Guy I worked for tried to get around the employee status by having us sign a Independent contractor agreement. I’ve since regretted working for this guy as an independent 1099 contractor for years knowing full well I was considered his employee by the Texas Workforce Commission. It seems everyone does this here in Texas. There are so many sub-contractors who have crews of “independent contractors” who are really hourly employees. Wish Texas would crack down hard on this and all the illegal labor being used as this would really help raise the pay scale and work conditions for legal residential construction workers.
